Focusing on an international student, Scholar Yuxin Jin of the University of Nottingham in the study uncovers how external motivations for learning English transform and internalize over time and environmental changes. The research reveals that the student's learning and living experiences in the UK significantly impact their attitude towards English, shifting from stress-driven to interest-driven, enhancing both learning efficiency and enjoyment.

Self-Determination Theory (SDT) suggests that fulfilling individuals' needs for relatedness, autonomy, and competence is key to igniting intrinsic motivation.
