In today's globalized world, language learning is not just about communication but also a key to cultural understanding. Especially with English as a global lingua franca, what motivates international students to study English in the UK? This study delves into the motivational factors of a Chinese international student learning English in the UK through the lens of Self-Determination Theory (SDT).

Focusing on an
international student, Scholar Yuxin Jin of the University of Nottingham in the
study uncovers how external motivations for learning English transform and
internalize over time and environmental changes. The research reveals that the
student's learning and living experiences in the UK significantly impact their
attitude towards English, shifting from stress-driven to interest-driven,
enhancing both learning efficiency and enjoyment.
Self-Determination
Theory (SDT) suggests that fulfilling individuals' needs for relatedness,
autonomy, and competence is key to igniting intrinsic motivation. This study
demonstrates how teaching strategies, such as interactive activities and
differentiated assignments, can enhance students' intrinsic motivation through
a practical case.
The study also points
out that the overemphasis on English exam grades by parents and teachers may
overlook the positive impact of learning English itself, and the blame and lack
of support for students' poor performance can lead to a decline in learning
motivation. By providing correct attributions and timely feedback, teachers can
boost students' confidence and motivation to learn English.
Though the study's
sample is limited, its findings offer valuable insights into the motivation
behind international students' language learning and provide theoretical
support for designing more effective language teaching strategies.
