Abstract
Gansu Province is endowed with abundant folk cultural resources, among
which Hua’er (a genre of folk
singing), Huanxian shadow puppetry, and Qingyang sachets possess pronounced
cultural distinctiveness. Nevertheless, the current English translation and
cross-cultural communication of Gansu folk culture are constrained by multiple
problems: a limited pool of translation agents, fragmented content,
insufficient media convergence, inadequate audience orientation, and the
absence of effect evaluation. From the perspective of cultural exchanges and
mutual learning, this study constructs a dual encoding-decoding model for the
translation-based communication of Gansu folk culture by integrating Lasswell’s
5W model. It examines the translation and communication process in terms of
translation agents, content, media channels, target audiences, and effects, and
further proposes corresponding strategies, namely diversifying translation
subjects, building multi-dimensional communication channels, and establishing
evaluation and feedback mechanisms. The discussion is to provide both
theoretical reference and practical directions for the global communication of
regional folk culture.
