Abstract

In the context of globalization, intangible cultural heritage is going through a severe crisis of intergenerational transmission disruption, which is especially acute in the traditional handicrafts of ethnic minorities. Taking Miao embroidery in Shibadong Village as an example, this paper employs a single-case qualitative research design and uses forty-two semi-structured interviews, multi-sited participant observation, and thematic analysis to explore the underlying mechanisms of intergenerational transmission fracture. The results show that there is a fundamental paradox: although industrialization and tourism have brought economic benefits to the village, they have also exacerbated the intergenerational cleavage of handicraft skills. Mechanized production, institutional training, and commercialized design, the modernization pathways, have not been able to supplement the traditional master-apprentice system; instead, they have replaced it with a hollowed-out transmission pattern where practitioners can only touch the surface of culture but cannot practice its craft. This is further developed in the paper by developing the idea of asynchronicity between the accumulation of economic capital and the rupture of cultural habitus, providing a critical re-evaluation of the prevailing preservation paradigm according to which thriving industries sustain heritage. In this way, it provides a theoretical background to the process of heritage policymaking within the environment of rapid rural change.
