Abstract

The use of Chinese paper-cutting as a diplomatic gift and banquet decoration has elevated its cultural visibility, yet it has also exposed a critical communication challenge: its motifs encode dense folkloric meanings that are inaccessible to foreign audiences. While previous studies have noted this gap, they have not systematically linked digital technologies to communication theory. This paper proposes that multimodal intelligent technologies—voice interaction, augmented reality (AR), and generative design—can reconstruct interpretive contexts rather than merely translate motifs. We develop a three-layer transcoding model (form, narrative, value) and map it onto these digital affordances. The framework yields four guiding principles and redefines ICH digitization as context cultivation, not symbol archiving.
