Reconstructing the Value and System of Application-oriented Undergraduate Translation Curriculum Through the Lens of Telling China’s Story Well

Abstract
With the promotion of the capacity of international communication having ascended to the national strategy level, the goal of “telling China’s story well” brings some new demands on translation talent training from the utilization of “language conversion” to “cultural communication”. However, the existing application-oriented undergraduate translation curriculum usually manifests a “de-emphasis on cultural communication and an emphasis on language skills” trend. As a result, the narrowing of translation education to mere technical training becomes evident, while also obscuring translation’s essence as a crucial cross-cultural communication activity. The aim of this paper is to draw on curriculum value theory, the cultural turn in translation studies, and international communication theory to systematically analyze the value deviations of the traditional translation curriculum with regard to objectives, content, and role positioning. The research believes that to achieve curriculum reform in foreign languages, it is essential to promote a value orientation shift from “skill-based” to “culture-based”. Based on this, the author puts forward a progressive competence framework of “language competence, cultural competence, communicative competence” and a three-dimensional integrated curriculum system architecture of “basic dimension, core dimension, leading dimension”. Consequently, the author demonstrates the supporting conditions for realizing curriculum value from three dimensions: teacher development, resource construction, and assessment reform. As a result, it is believed that the research in this article can provide useful theoretical references for the reform of application-oriented undergraduate translation curricula.
