A Corpus-based Study on Chinese-English Terminological Equivalence in ITU-T Optical Fiber Standards

Abstract

This study explored Chinese–English terminological equivalence in ITU-T optical fiber standards based on a bilingual parallel corpus compiled from Recommendations G.650.2 (2016) and G.652 (2024). Although international standards seek to ensure terminological consistency, equivalent terms across languages do not always correspond in a straightforward way. Empirical evidence from telecommunications standards, however, remains limited. To examine these issues, candidate terms were extracted from the corpus via a rule-based approach and then aligned through document structure, abbreviation matching, and manual verification. The aligned terminology was further analyzed from the perspectives of translation strategy and concept-oriented terminological equivalence. A terminology-oriented knowledge graph was also developed to represent bilingual term relations and semantic categories. The analysis identified one-to-one correspondence as the predominant equivalence pattern, while many-to-one mappings and a smaller number of cases involving limited lexical correspondence were also observed. Translation choices were found to vary with term structure, conceptual complexity, and established domain conventions. Comparison of the two ITU-T recommendations further showed that differences in terminology distribution were associated with their respective technical focuses rather than inconsistencies in translation. By combining corpus analysis with terminology management methods, this study provides an empirical explanation of bilingual terminology equivalence in fiber standards, and provides a practical framework for terminology organization and multilingual terminology management in professional and technical fields.
