Abstract
The present study analyses the dialect words translated in Mo Yan’s Big Breasts and Wide Hips and explores the translator’s choices in the translated version of this novel. The analysis is chiefly concerned with the translator’s strategies and skills. Due to the specialty of this novel, the author Mo Yan must employ the unique and local Gao mi dialect to portray a series of characters and plots, thereby showcasing the customs and regional culture of the region, which are based on the real local situation. Due to the incongruity between Chinese and English cultures, the translator Howard Goldblatt employed the two different translation methods, domestication and foreignization, as supplementary translation methods for each other to translate the dialect words in the original text, which primarily focuses on nouns, verbs, proverbs, and idioms. The charm and cultural connotation of the original work were successfully conveyed, as were its aesthetic values.
