Abstract
Mangifera L. belongs to the family Anacardiaceae, with 63 accepted species, and is the most important commercially cultivated fruit crop of India. It is grown in tropical and subtropical areas. It is endemic to South Asia, with India having the most varieties of mango. India alone produces about half of the world’s mangoes. Mango trees may reach a height of 30-40 metres and have a crown radius of 10-15 metres. It comes in over 1000 kinds, many of which ripen in the summer. From blossoming to ripening, the fruit takes four to five months. Mango is both India’s and Pakistan’s national fruit, as well as Bangladesh’s national tree. Langra, Chausa, Dashehari, Amrapali, Mallika, Malda, Baramasi, Neelgoa, Fazli, Krishna Bhog, Himsagar, Neelam, Kesar, Rajapuri, Vanraj, Baneshan, Badami, Gulab Khas, and other mango varieties are among the most popular. Most of the Indian states are cultivating Mango. In 2019, India produced 20.76 million tonnes of mangos, accounting for 20% of global production. Uttar Pradesh is the highest producer of mango during 2020-21. It’s a fantastic dietary supplement due to being high in vitamin A, vitamin C, and minerals like potas-sium and sodium, as well as fibre, sugar, carbohydrate, fat, and protein. It’s an-tifungal, anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant, and anti-viral, and also used to treat gastro, heart, skin, and hair problems. The current paper focuses on Mangifera species, its medicinal properties with phytoetymology. Phytoetymological treatment of all species of mango is compiled here for the first time. Phytoetymology of all 63 species names is based on 08 scientists or persons’ names, 30 Latin words, 08 Greek words, 09 Place names, 03 Resembling with Genus, 03 Vernacular names, and 01 Sanskrit and Italian.
