Advancing Cancer Screening Education Across the Medical Education Continuum: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract

Cancer screening is crucial for reducing cancer-related deaths. However, current medical education in this area remains insufficient. Existing problems consist of inconsistent curriculum design, inadequate clinical exposure, and uneven educational resources. Experiences from different countries, including China, suggest that standardized curricula, early clinical participation, multidisciplinary collaboration, and locally adapted educational approaches can improve learners’ knowledge, practical skills, and adherence to screening guidelines. In addition, emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), e-learning platforms, and big-data-based educational systems are increasingly being applied in medical education. These technologies can support personalized learning, provide adaptive feedback, and help with long-term competency assessment. Combining those tools with unified frameworks may help establish a more continuous and integrated educational system across different training stages. This review summarizes current limitations and recent advances in cancer screening education, highlighting the need for longitudinal, technology-supported, and equitable training systems to strengthen evidence-based screening practice.
