Abstract

The Spring Festival Gala (hereafter “Gala”) of China Media Group (CMG) is a core symbol of Chinese Spring Festival culture and a key window for overseas media to understand Chinese culture and China’s development. This study builds a Gala-related overseas media report corpus, covering its construction process, coding standards, and quality control. It also defines the core dimensions and implementation methods for corpus analysis. Using the corpus, the research looks into reporting tendencies, narrative focuses, and differences in cultural interpretation across overseas media. The results show that overseas Gala reports lean toward both “cultural display” and “value interpretation,” but reporting perspectives, emotional tones, and discourse frameworks vary notably by region. The Gala serves as an important carrier for China’s international cultural communication. Its corpus and related research methods can inform studies of similar cultural symbols and support efforts to optimize the Gala’s global communication strategy and boost the international influence of Chinese culture.
