Abstract
Under the implementation of the Rural Revitalization Strategy, rural children are situated between local culture and the modern educational system. A discourse corpus of rural children has been established through fieldwork conducted in 12 rural cultural stations in Tianquan County, Ya’an City. According to James Paul Gee’s model, especially the building tasks of Activity, Relationship, and Politics, this research examines how rural children use different language choices in class-room situations, daily interactions, and cultural activities to establish their identities. The findings show that rural children are able to adjust and combine various values to form a “situational” identity which links home and school, thus improving the understanding of rural children’s active role and providing suggestions for educational practices.
