An Information-theoretic Study of Culture-loaded Words in the English Translation of Desert Rites

Abstract

Studies of culture-loaded word (CLW) translation in literary texts have long depended on qualitative judgment. Such work has produced valuable close readings, yet it often leaves the informational complexity and cultural density of regional fiction unmeasured. This article proposes a five-dimensional entropy model comprising Cultural Density Entropy (H1), Cognitive Load Entropy (H2), Cultural Transfer Entropy (H3), Formal Asymmetry Entropy (H4), and Channel Capacity Entropy (H5). Taking 157 CLWs from the English translation of Xue Mo’s Desert Rites (Da Mo Ji) as data, the study reads translation through the lens of information theory, where translation is treated as a noisy channel involving source encoding, translatorial mediation, and target decoding. The findings show that CLW distribution is markedly uneven, a pattern shaped by the novel’s geography, thematic orientation, and regional cultural texture. Ecological items constitute the largest category, accounting for 27.39% of the corpus. Strategy use also varies by CLW type: material CLWs tend to be rendered literally; linguistic CLWs are more often translated freely, with free translation accounting for 51.4%; religious CLWs show a stronger tendency toward literal transliteration, and their transliteration rate reaches 13.8%, higher than that of other CLW categories. The model does not replace close reading; rather, it disciplines it by supplying a replicable means of tracing information transfer in literary translation. It also offers a methodological point of departure for corpus-informed studies of culturally dense texts.
