Abstract
In view of the strategic context of the promotion of Chinese culture throughout the world, the work done on the English translation of classical Chinese sports vocabulary demands methodological innovation. In order to fill this gap, this paper uses corpus-based translation studies as the main methodology, establishing an empirical framework based on a self-constructed, special-purpose multi-modal Chinese-English parallel corpus. Using the tools of corpus linguistics such as extended unit of meaning analysis, semantic prosody examination, and discourse object meaning network analysis, this paper systematically identifies recurrent strategic tendencies (translation norms). Moreover, it also empirically demonstrates how such norms shape cultural images in the discourses of the target language. This study offers a verifiable empirical avenue to research on the international translation and image dissemination of the traditional Chinese sports culture.
