AIGC Empowering College Students’ English Learning in China: A Student Perspective

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) presents a paradigm shift opportunity in foreign language education, yet existing research predominantly focuses on educators’ perspectives, neglecting student experiences. Adopting a stu-dent acceptance perspective, this study examines AIGC-assisted English learning among 123 college students in Hunan Province, China, through questionnaires and qualitative analysis. Results reveal students’ “cautiously optimistic” attitudes: 54.5% hold positive views and 66.67% report increased confidence, yet only 10.7% use AIGC daily (high-frequency users), revealing an “attitude-behavior paradox.” It also shows that the application of AIGC in language skill learning exhibits a text-dominant, lagging speaking/listening pattern, with translation and writing perceived as significantly more helpful than listening and speaking. Prompt awareness emerges as the strongest usage predictor: students recognizing its importance are 5.77 times more likely to be frequent users, and it correlates positively with improvements in learning confidence. Students face multidimensional challenges, notably technical/performance issues and psycho-logical dependency. Based on the findings, a “four-in-one” collaborative development model is proposed by integrating AIGC literacy into curricula to foster deep technology-education integration.
