Abstract
Traditionally, the clinical classification, evaluation, and treatment of aphasia have been biologically based, i.e., grounded in the location of the brain lesion. However, the limited success of remediation programs rooted in this conventional approach has highlighted the need for alternative perspectives in aphasia rehabilitation. Among the most promising is the psycholinguistic approach to aphasia. In this framework, classification is often guided by models of language processing, with patients grouped into clinically meaningful categories based on the specific locus of impairment within the language processing system. Furthermore, psycho-linguistically informed remediation tends to emphasize the accessibility of verbs and their associated syntactic information, offering a more satisfactory explanation for certain linguistic phenomena than traditional methods. Moreover, a case study demonstrates that the psycholinguistic approach enables researchers to pinpoint deficits in a patient's language processing system and design targeted interventions accordingly.
