Abstract
Yu Hua’s novel To Live recounts the tragic life of its protagonist, Fugui, and reflects the transformation of rural Chinese society. In the novel, dialogue serves as a crucial narrative device, employed to shape character personalities, advance the plot, and reveal thematic concerns. Within the field of pragmatics, the Cooperative Principle provides a normative framework for human communication. However, it is often through the deliberate violation of this principle that speakers’ underlying intentions become most evident. Analyzing the dialogues in To Live through the lens of violations of the Cooperative Principle provides a profound linguistic and narratological basis to understand why To Live can transcend eras and resonate with readers worldwide.
