Abstract

The English Raising Construction is a special syntactic structure that is of common concern to generative grammar and functional linguistics. Its core features are “subject raising” and “semantic non-locality”. Its information distribution features include thematic, focus prominence, and topic chain connection. Based on the theory of “raising transformation” of generative grammar and information structure of functional linguistics, this paper systematically analyzes the information distribution law of English raising construction, including theme selection, focus configuration, and topic advancement mode, and puts forward three translation strategies: topic reconstruction, focus shift, and sentence adaptation according to the difficulties of Chinese translation. It is found that the English raising construction realizes the thematization of known information and the focus of new information through the promotion operation. The Chinese translation needs to break the shackles of English syntax and follow the Chinese expression habit of “topic-comment”. Therefore, it can realize the natural transmission and functional equivalence of information through word order adjustment, component completion, sentence pattern conversion, and other means.
