Abstract

Winesburg, Ohio, has great value in literature, and many scholars have analyzed this work from different perspectives. Most of them paid much attention to the writing techniques, the theme of alienation, and the analysis of grotesque characters. However, there are a few comparisons between female characters in this work. Feminism, also known as Womanism, criticizes social relations. This article uses a feminist view to analyze four female characters and find out the reasons that cause their tragic life. As an oppressed group, this article aims to analyze how women are objectified, oppressed, and discriminated against in a patriarchal society. My conclusion is that whether married women or unmarried women, they both have little living space in the male-dominated society due to the harsh living conditions and their inner weaknesses. Under the influence of internal and external factors, women can only be reduced to the appendages of men and the victims of social and religious treaties. Therefore, the awakening of women is the way to fundamentally solve the problem of Gender antagonism.
