A Study on Modern Chinese Translated Literature Guided by Polysystem Theory

Abstract
Modern Chinese translated literature, the product of the boom of literary translation in modern China, is regarded as an important part of Chinese literature and plays a crucial role in promoting the modernization of the latter. Polysystem Theory, a theory proposed by Itamar Even-zohar, an Israeli scholar, integrates translation into broader sociocultural practices and processes and introduces historical, systematic, and dynamic perspectives into translation studies, thus providing a practical theoretical framework to the study of modern Chinese translated literature. Guided by this theory, this thesis attempts to present an ob-jective description of the acceptance of modern Chinese translated literature within the target cultural (poly)system and its influence on the development of the target literature and culture. The study is focused on the following issues: the position of modern Chinese translated literature in the Chinese literary (poly)system, translators’ selection of original works and translation strategies, and the influence of translated literature on the development of modern Chinese literature. The study aims to reveal the norms and patterns that constrain literary translation, thereby guiding the practice of literary translation in China.
