Evaluation of Technical Translation Quality in Engineering Documents—A Multidimensional Framework

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of English translations of Chinese engineering technical standards and documents, addressing the critical need for high-quality technical translation in global engineering projects. By analyzing multiple real-world cases from various engineering domains, including civil, hydraulic, and transportation engineering, We identify common challenges in technical terminology, syntactic structure, and cultural adaptation. A multidimensional evaluation framework is proposed, integrating theoretical perspectives from translation studies, corpus linguistics, and specialist-communicative translation analysis. Our findings indicate that while machine translation technologies have advanced significantly, human oversight remains essential for ensuring accuracy and reliability in technical translations. The research concludes with practical strategies for improving translation quality through standardized terminolo-gy management, context-aware processing, and hybrid human-AI collaboration models. This research contributes to the ongoing effort to enhance the internationalization of Chinese engineering standards and facilitate cross-border engineering collaboration.
