Bridging the Linguistic Divide: Machine Translation and Post-editing in the Specialized Domain of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Abstract

The “going global” of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) poses challenges to the efficient translation and dissemination of TCM. The model of machine translation post editing (MTPE) represents an innovative solution of overcoming the challenges, and also an optional path to promote high-quality dissemination of TCM culture. Taking the machine translation of academic literature of TCM as examples, this paper examines the applicability of online machine translation platform in this field, summarizes the different errors of machine translation, and puts forward corresponding suggestions for post editing. It is found that machine translation has limitations in terms of term recognition, word meaning matching, semantic segmentation and expression simplification, which need to be high-lighted during post editing. The article further elaborates the relevant suggestions on optimizing the practice of human-machine translation of TCM literature from four aspects: the establishment of terminology standardization, the design of TCM machine translation engine, the construction of quality feedback mecha-nism and the cultivation of translators’ information literacy.
