Abstract

The Gua Sha Treatment dramatizes a profound cultural conflict between the traditional Chinese healing practice and the American legal and child welfare systems in misunderstanding. This paper tries to argue that the film orchestrates a “symphony” of universal values, familial love, and the desire for well-being, transcending cultural boundaries. Driven by the plot conflicts, The Gua Sha Treatment moves beyond simply documenting a cultural misunderstanding and serves as a critique of the ethnocentric legal systems. The paper advocates for empathy, dialogue, and cultural translation as essential bridges for reconciliation in an increasingly globalized world. The film’s enduring relevance lies in its demonstration that true justice in a multicultural context requires the capacity to see the healing in another culture’s marks. Furthermore, this paper takes The Gua Sha Treatment as a sample to analyze the cultural conflict and explore the obstacles in the process of cultural exchanges between China and the United States.
