Abstract

Following the ‘85 New Wave, Chinese realist painting, under the profound influence of conceptual art, broke free from the mold of singular representation and achieved its contemporary reconstruction. This paper aims to explore the core mechanism of this reconstruction—the interpenetration and symbiosis of concept and method. It first analyzes how the intervention of conceptual factors triggered an internal shift in the narrative modes and spiritual dimensions of realist painting. Subsequently, it discusses the methodological responses to conceptual expression, manifested in the pluralistic evolution of technical deconstruction, image translation, and the reinvention of tradition. By examining the interactive relationships between concept-driven creation and methodological response, as well as linguistic self-awareness and the effective bearing of concept, this paper demonstrates how creative practice and critical discourse jointly propelled the formation of a new realist paradigm. It ultimately concludes that this two-way interpenetration is not only key to its response to historical challenges but also the fundamental path for constructing an artistic system possessing both local characteristics and contemporary value.
