A Multimodal Narrative Translation Model for the International Communication of Lingnan Intangible Cultural Heritage: A Case Study of Cantonese Opera

Abstract

Cantonese Opera is an essential part of China’s intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in the Guangdong-Hongkong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA). Taking Cantonese Opera as an example, this study attempts to explore a multimodal narrative translation model. The study finds that the three-dimension integration model of narrative, modality, and translation is an effective model in the international communication of Lingnan intangible cultural heritage. The integration of narra-tives, the reconstruction of modalities, and the application of translation strategies are identified as the core components that constitute this model. The findings contribute to preserve and promote the international communication of Canton-ese Opera at home and abroad.
