Abstract

Open psychiatric wards represent a patient-centered model of psychiatric care management. This paper briefly outlines their current safety management and nursing practices, identifies existing challenges, and explores future development directions. Open psychiatric wards offer distinct advantages, including the facilitation of more comprehensive supportive therapeutic environments, the implementation of individual and group-based therapies, enhanced multidisciplinary collaboration, and the promotion of patient autonomy, dignity, and freedom of movement—all aimed at improving patients’ social adaptation capabilities. However, they also present challenges such as heightened ward management risks and greater difficulty in addressing potential hazards. Consequently, nursing quality in open psychiatric wards requires further enhancement. Nurses must pay closer attention to patients’ psychological changes, necessitating higher standards in nursing risk management, crisis intervention and response capabilities, and technical nursing procedures. Key future development directions include intelligent management systems, personalized treatment approaches, and enhanced social integration training programs.
