Abstract
Headline is the “window” of news. Through this small window, readers can gain a glimpse of the essence of the news. In recent years, sports events have increasingly received attention, and the related news headlines deserve studying. Previous research are the outdated examples, and the research on translating various types of news headlines into Chinese remains insufficient. Taking the 2024 World Team Table Tennis Championships as a case, this article applies a large number of examples to appreciate the language art of English sports news headlines, and explores three Chinese translation methods. The result shows that English news headlines are usually simple and concise, making good use of metaphor, me-tonymy, euphemism, pun, alliteration, end rhyme, antithesis, and other rhetorical devices, idioms and allusions. Literal translation is often used to retain the original style of the headline. This study enhances readers' ability to appreciate news headlines and enriches the expressive range of Chinese headlines.
