Abstract

Objective: This study retrospectively analyzes serum-specific IgE levels in children with adenoid hypertrophy in Qingdao, China. It aims to identify common allergens and examine their correlation with the severity of hypertrophy. Methods: The serum concentration of allergen-specific IgE in 392 children with adenoid hypertrophy in Qingdao, China, from April 2022 to June 2023 was measured. The children were grouped according to sex, age, and visit time, and the distribution characteristics of serum allergens in children with adenoid hypertrophy were described. Moreover, according to the degree of adenoid obstruction of the choana under nasopharyngeal fibre endoscopy, the children were divided into three groups: mild, moderate, and severe, to explore the correlation between the allergen level and the degree of adenoid hypertrophy. Results: The rates of posi-tivity for food allergens and inhaled allergens in children with adenoid hypertrophy in Qingdao, China were 72.2% and 73.5%, respectively. Milk was the most common allergen (52.3%). The subgroup analysis revealed that school-aged children were significantly more likely to be positive for allergens than preschool-aged children were (P<0.05). The rate of positivity for wheat/buckwheat, Sycamorea/ash in summer, and artemisia in autumn was higher than that in the other seasons (P<0.05). The multivariate linear regression results for allergen grade showed that the OR value of grade 1 allergy to milk was 3.203 (P<0.05). Conclusions: Milk, the combination of moulds, Dermatophagoides farina, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, and Blomia tropicalis are the most common allergens in children with adenoid hypertrophy in the Qingdao area. There are significant differences in the distribution of common allergens according to age, and milk is the most important risk factor. Furthermore, our findings indicate that milk allergy is a significant risk factor for adenoid hypertrophy (OR=3.203, P<0.05).
