Achievements of Cultivating Pre-Service Teachers’ Self-Directed Learning Ability in Blended Ancient Chinese Courses, Education and Teaching Research and Reform Project (Grant No. JJ2024Y007) at Beijing Union University, 2024.
Abstract
The teaching of Ancient Chinese faces numerous challenges in the contemporary era. The main challenges in teaching are as follows: the divide between ancient and modern Chinese, the absence of students’ learning interest, and the anti-quated teaching methods adopted by teachers. University students exhibit weaknesses in self-directed Learning (SDL) of Ancient Chinese, including insufficient motivation, singular learning methods, and inadequate utilization of learning resources. Currently, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has been widely applied in the field of education. In Ancient Chinese teaching, GenAI can effectively assist university students in SDL, specifically through three pathways: pre-class, in-class, and post-class. Pre-class, GenAI can assist students in intelligent pre-lesson preparation by formulating learning objectives and study plans. During class, GenAI facilitates interactive learning among teachers and students while providing real-time instructional and learning support. Post-class, students can utilize GenAI to review and consolidate key knowledge points, thereby cultivating independent inquiry skills. Teachers should fully leverage the technological advantages of GenAI to establish a “teacher-led + GenAI-assisted” teaching model, comprehensively enhancing students’ SDL capabilities
