Research on C-E Translation of Southern Fujian Snacks Based on Reception Aesthetics Theory

Abstract

Southern Fujian snacks, or Minnan snacks, as a symbol of traditional culture in Fujian province, arouse more attention from people all over the world. This paper conducts a study on the translation strategies of Southern Fujian snacks from three dimensions of Reception Aesthetics Theory: horizon of expectation, blanks of meaning, and fusion of horizons by taking the C-E translations of 53 Minnan snacks in Guidelines for English Translation of Public Signs Part 14: Minnan Culture released by Xiamen Translation Association as an example. The study indicates that three main translation strategies and the theory are closely related. Amplification satisfies readers' basic expectations by clarifying cooking methods and ingredient details. Conversion fills readers' interest blanks by using hyponymy, hypernymy, and synonym. Transliteration compensates for reader' cultural uniqueness through annotation, initiating the fusion of the intended readers' horizons. This research expands the application of Reception Aesthetics Theory and also contributes to the implementation of the "going global" strategy of Chinese food culture.
