Huang Zi’s School Song for Vocal Music

Abstract

Huang Zi was a highly influential composer and music educator in China during the 1930s. Although his life was only frozen at the age of 34, he left behind numerous masterpieces that combine artistic and intellectual qualities in his short creative career, and his vocal works are a significant and representative part of his creative field. This article starts with the logical classification and in-depth analysis of Huang Zi’s vocal works by researchers, and systematically conducts multiple precise searches and meticulous sorting of papers with keywords such as “Huang Zi songs,” “Huang Zi Vocal Music,” and “Huang Zi School Song Works” in various academic journals and periodicals from 1956 to 2025. The main purpose of the study is to select five school songs from Huang Zi’s vocal works as typical cases, conduct hierarchical research and analysis based on the differences in theme connotation and genre characteristics, and on this basis, combine the historical background and music aesthetics perspective to propose my humble opinions on the characteristics and value of Huang Zi’s school song creation.
