Abstract

A country’s industrial image reflects the collective perception and impression held by both domestic and international publics regarding its industrial sector—encompassing material achievements, cultural dimensions, and micro-level elements such as corporate brands. Guided by Fairclough’s three-dimensional analytical framework, this study examines linguistic features in Chinese and American news texts concerning “Chinese industry” through the analysis of high-frequency words, collocations, and concordance lines. It aims to uncover the constructed image of Chinese industry and the underlying socio-cultural factors, providing a comparative perspective on media representation. Findings indicate that Chinese news discourse portrays China’s industry as “innovation-driven and high-quality developed,” whereas American discourse tends to construct an image of “remarkable yet competitively contentious” Chinese industry. This research highlights the role of discourse in shaping national image and seeks to contribute to the construction and global communication of China’s industrial image by revealing the linguistic strategies and ideological underpinnings in cross-cultural media contexts.
