Abstract

Amid global economic turbulence and intensifying domestic industrial competition, Chinese enterprises are accelerating their “going global” strategies as a critical path to sustain growth, enhance competitiveness, and hedge against internal and external uncertainties. This study takes market competition as the primary analytical lens and investigates how it acts as a powerful external driver compelling firms to restructure their internal resources, evolve dynamic capabilities, and undertake strategic transformation. It examines how these pressures translate into differentiated internationalization pathways—namely greenfield investments, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, and, most notably, supply chain internationalization. Particular attention is given to the emerging trend of supply chain globalization, which emphasizes modular production relocation, global value network integration, and platform-driven delivery systems. By integrating industrial organization theory with the resource-based view, this research constructs a “pressure-transformation-globalization” framework to elucidate the logic behind firms’ globalization under competitive stress. The study offers theoretical insights and practical recommendations for firms’ international strategies, while also proposing policy implications to support sustainable global expansion.
