The Philosophical Connotations and Artistic Tension of Tao Yuanming’s Poems from the Perspective of Conceptual Metaphor

Abstract

This paper embarks on an in-depth exploration of Tao Yuanming's poems by applying the innovative Conceptual Metaphor Theory. By employing the meticulous close reading of texts, each line and word of his poems is carefully examined. In combination with interdisciplinary research methods, which integrate elements from fields like literature, history, and cognitive science, a comprehensive analysis is carried out. The analysis focuses on a wide range of conceptual metaphors within his works. Metaphors related to life depict the poet's understanding of the human journey, while those about nature reveal his profound connection with the natural world. Social-related metaphors offer insights into the social fabric of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. These metaphors are found to be deeply rooted in Tao Yuanming's personal experiences, such as his struggles in the officialdom and his idyllic rural life. The cultural context of the era, with its prevalence of certain philosophical thoughts, and cognitive psychological factors also contribute to their formation. The study reveals that these metaphors not only add depth to the poem's themes, making them more thought-provoking but also help shape a unique artistic style that is both simple and profound. Moreover, they play a crucial role in cultural inheritance, passing down the wisdom and values of that time, and in the dissemination of ideas, inspiring readers across generations. This research thus provides a fresh perspective for understanding the philosophical connotations hidden within Tao Yuanming's poems and the unique artistic value they hold.
