Abstract

The accounts by Robert Capa regarding the photograph The Falling Soldier differ between the formal narrative intended for the media and the informal story shared with colleagues during casual encounters. The disparity between these accounts lies in the fact that the former was fully embraced by his brother Cornell Capa and his biographer Richard Whelan. However, the tale that Capa recounted to O. D. Gallagher in a small, rundown hotel, later relayed to Phillip Knightley and Jorge Lewinsky, was rejected by Cornell Capa and Richard Whelan, who denied the meeting between Robert Capa and O. D. Gallagher. This investigation demonstrates that such a meeting did take place in a small hotel in Hendaye, France, aligning with the timeline of Robert Capa's journey to Bilbao, weeks after the bombing of Guernica.
