A Review of ERP Research on the Effects of Emotion on Syntactic Processing

Abstract

Human language communication not only contains the expression of emotions but also can be affected by emotions. The present paper focuses on ERP research on the effects of emotion on language processing, summarizing the effects of different emotional valences on syntactic processing. According to previous ERP studies, it was found that emotions can affect different stages of syntactic processing. Different experiments have revealed various patterns of emotional effects: some studies have identified the modulating effects of emotion on syntactic processing, as indicated by changes in the amplitude of LAN and P600 effects; other research has observed the primary effect of emotion reflected in the amplitude changes of LPC and N400 effects, while some have found neither modulating nor main effects of emotion in syntax processing. Moreover, the present paper speculates on the possible reasons for the inconsistency of patterns of emotional effects in syntactic processing. Finally, future research concerning the topic is prospected in this paper.
