Abstract

This paper focuses on the challenges and strategies of cultivating students' intercultural competence in translation courses for English majors in China's higher education system. This paper points out that the current translation teaching focuses mainly on the cultivation of language competence by means of elaboration of certain translation skills and corresponding exercises. The in-class translation exercises mostly pursue the equivalence of vocabulary and syntax. When put under intercultural context, students find it difficult to reproduce cultural connotations within the two working languages. The translation courses face the problems of a lack of design for intercultural competence in the teaching syllabus, a lack of intercultural practice in traditional Chinese teaching methods, and a singular evaluation system. To solve the above problems, the authors propose to integrate intercultural competence into the teaching syllabus, innovate traditional teaching methods, and build a whole-process evaluation system. These strategies help to enhance students' cultural sensitivity and inclusiveness through diversified activities, thus enabling them to be qualified translators with an international outlook and intercultural competence.
