Manabu Sato’s View of Learning and Its Instructional Contribution

Abstract

Manabu Sato, as a Japanese educator, has long been committed to school re-form practices and classroom research based on a “learning community”. The article reveals Sato’s three-in-one dialogue-based learning view of “world constructing”, “friends making”, and “self-exploring”, analyzing the teaching contribution of Sato’s learning perspective based on the current situation of classroom teaching in primary and secondary schools. It is believed that its contribution lies in its important insight into the reform of classroom teaching in primary and secondary schools: (1) the transformation of teachers’ teaching: transforming from “one speaking” to “listening”; transitioning from “cutting off” to “series connection”; changing from “forward” to “rumination”. (2) the transformation of students’ learning: transforming from “passive absorption” to “active operation”; shifting from “independent thinking” to “collaborative learning”; promoting from “individual speeches” to “shared expressions”.
