Examining the Effects of Simultaneous Auditory and Visual Stimuli on the Development of L2 Lexical Competence

Abstract

Numerous studies have dissected how SLA can benefit from a certain stimulus (visual, auditory, or kinaesthetic, respectively). In the fields of SLA and TESOL, however, there is a paucity of in-depth research on the simultaneous effects of two modalities that can be achieved through video-based learning. In addition, few studies can augment the scale of lexical competence to its sociocultural level. Therefore, this paper investigates the implications of simultaneous auditory and visual stimuli on the development of lexical competence in SLA from the pragmatic perspective. The association between multimodality and sociocultural competence is given considerable attention, and the functioning mechanism of modalities is analysed to determine if the synchronicity can produce significant results. The project conducted on students majoring in English at a Chinese institution supports the hypothesis that the simultaneous utilisation of two modalities can be a magic formula for most second language learners with English CEFR levels B2 or above to improve their lexical competence; both theoretical and practical implications are conducive to generating innovative instructional strategies and ideas for TESOL.
