Abstract
This study assessed the relationship between the social cognitive ability and competence motivation of student-athletes to develop a personalized mental skills training program for Nanjing Vocational Institute of Railway Technology, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. Based on the conclusions derived in this study, the following are the recommendations: (1) It is recommended to inspire and motivate student-athletes, so they can appreciate their sport more and understand the advantages of success. It is advised that student-athletes invest in any of these since they can help them become more motivated like body and mind conditioning, mental preparation, and training; (2) It is important to establish a school-wide motivation plan that gives athletes psychological confidence. For instance, the athletic department can interact with parents and other members of the school community to boost student athletes' morale; (3) Humans by nature seek out and build healthy relationships. Students who compete in sports and participate in team-building exercises will be more motivated, thus implementing such programs through the sports department is strongly advised; (4) Compared to the majority of students, student-athletes are a special population with specific needs. Therefore, the school should make an investment in hiring a physician and a sports psychologist to manage the student athletes’ unique physical and psychological needs; (5) Both coaches and athletes are encouraged to utilize the proposed personalized mental skills training program. For student-athletes, learning the tactics and techniques of a sport is especially crucial. The secret to motivating them is to celebrate their accomplishments, motivate them to get better, and impart the necessary knowledge.
