An Empirical Study on Perceptual Learning Style Preferences of Private College English Major

Abstract
As an important individual factor of learners, perceptual learning style has attracted attention in foreign language (EFL) teaching. Based on Reid's VAKTIG Model, this study makes a quantitative study of 40 junior English majors in Guangdong Peizheng College, exploring their perceptual learning style preferences and their relationship with English proficiency. Through descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis, it was found that the private college English majors demonstrated a variety of perceptual learning style preferences, and there existed significant relationships between tactile and individual styles and TEM4 score, which to some extent differed from the findings in other research. Pedagogical implications for Chinese EFL instruction and research on perceptual learning styles at private colleges include raising teachers’ and learners’ awareness of perceptual learning styles, adopting multi-style instruction to accommodate and cultivate a variety of perceptual learning styles, using computer-assisted teaching and learning to help enrich EFL students’ perceptual learning experiences, and cultivating learner autonomy to enhance perceptual learning effectiveness.
