Abstract

COVID-19 is raging worldwide, and our lives have been affected in many ways, which are reflected in the official reports of the mainstream media. This study selects much information on the epidemic from two mainstream media, China Daily and The New York Times, revealing the two countries’ underlying ideology and potential positions in the news discourse. This paper analyzes the news reports on the epidemic based on conceptual metaphors and multimodal metaphors theory. It explores different metaphorical meanings of Chinese and American news reports in three aspects: image metaphor, intertextual metaphor, and cultural metaphor. In addition, factors for their differences in collectivism and individualism, high-context culture and low-context culture, and high-power distance and low-power distance are discussed. This study can help us understand the attitudes of China and the United States in news reporting and enrich the study of multimodal metaphors and the current research theories on the coverage of the outbreak between China and the United States.
