On Teaching of English Speech in Post-CET Period

Abstract

Public speaking plays an impartial role in our daily lives, while English speech emphasizes practical English skills. The thesis focuses on the mandatory advanced language and culture course for undergraduate students in non-English majors at SUES, titled "Practice of English Speeches". The course aims to enhance students' understanding of spoken English skills, foster lifelong learning abilities, cultivate cultural literacy, and improve their English proficiency in presenting, interpreting, and promoting Chinese culture globally. With 10 years of teaching experience and feedback, it demonstrates the benefits and importance of an English Speech course in the post-CET period. Improving the quality of teaching and learning in higher education necessitates the provision of high-quality foreign language education for college and university students. For a more effective College English Teaching Curriculum, it is suggested that English Speech Practice be included as a compulsory (or selective) course in linguistic application for college and university students.
