Abstract

“To the Oak Tree” is a contemporary poem written by the Chinese poet Shu Ting. Through the artistic technique of holistic symbolism, the poem uses the inner monologue of the 'cottonwood' to the 'oak tree' to sing passionately and honestly about her ideals of personality and her view of love, which requires that they stand shoulder to shoulder, independent of each other and in deep love with each other. The poem's careful arrangement of chapter and verse allows for a natural blend of lyricism and argument, giving the richness and delicacy of feeling a rational gloss. This paper will analyze “To the Oak Tree” from the perspectives of formalism and feminism, respectively. It further explores the dialectical relationship between form and content in “To the Oak Tree”, as well as the female subjectivity and view of love shown in the poem from these two perspectives.
