Abstract

Although there is no cure for autism spectrum disorders (ASD), early interventions and treatments are significant for the prognosis. However, the delay in diagnosis prevents children with ASD from receiving interventions promptly. Currently, few detailed studies have focused on the barriers that impede the efficiency of ASD diagnosis in China and have focused on specific regions or provinces. This study attempted to fill this gap by focusing on Guangdong Province, China, from the perspective of parents of children with ASD. A detailed qualitative case study was conducted by interviewing four mothers of Children with ASD. Participants’ answers about the barriers in the diagnosis process were summarized into themes and sub-themes. The study also noted the disproportionate representation of males in the autism population and the heavy burden on mothers in Chinese families with children with ASD. Future research will investigate the uneven attention given to different genders and the traditional gender roles in caregiving in Chinese families with children with ASD.
