This paper examines the history, dilemmas and optimization strategies of the inheritance and protection of intangible cultural heritage in China, and forms the following research conclusions: (1) The inheritance and protection of sports intangible cultural heritage in China has gone through a stage of exploration and development, and has entered a period of rapid development since its formal accession to the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (UNESCO) in 2004. (2) The process of inheritance and protection of sports intangible cultural heritage in China faces three dilemmas: insufficient funding, lack of inheritors, and a single mode of inheritance.3. In response to the above dilemmas, optimal strategies for inheritance and protection of sports intangible cultural heritage in China are proposed, mainly: (a) broadening funding channels; (b) strengthening the construction of education and inheritance positions; (c) standardizing project competition standards and creating multi-level events; (d) excavating and displaying project value, etc.
