Abstract

This paper examines the concern for the state behind the philosophy of evolution that spread widely among intellectuals in modern China after the Sino-Japanese naval war. With Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao and Yan Fu as the main subjects of the analysis, two questions are addressed: first, what was the connotation of the state that the intellectuals of the late Qing Dynasty were concerned with: the dynasty of heaven, the emperor or the people's state? Secondly, what were the reasons for the stagnation or recurrence of the popular enlightenment ideas of the late Qing scholars in the Republic? The answer in this paper is that the huge gap between the state care and the new people's ideal, which manifested itself in the reality of the early Republic, caused many modern scholars to have recurring ideas and changing positions. Even though, history was driven by the new movement, the problems they realized still had objective significance for the subsequent history.
