Abstract

Objective: To conceptualise psychological well-being in the elderly. Methods: Walker and Avant’s method of concept analysis was employed. The key elements for conceptualising psychological well-being in the elderly (including defining attributes, antecedents and consequences of psychological well-being) were identified from included articles. Results: 53 included articles provided data for psychological well-being conceptualisation. Antecedents included a number of factors, namely, social, economic, political, religious, and psychological factors (personal, cognitive factors and communicative personality features). The consequences of psychological well-being were also identified: those related to favorable cardiovascular health, those related to quality of life, and physical function-related consequences. Conclusions: Our conceptualization of psychological well-being based on the defining attributes, antecedents and consequences resulted in a preliminary conceptual model. This model can be further tested and may inform the development of psychological well-being measures and interventions for the elderly focusing on psychological well-being.
