A Corpus-based Study on Translation Strategies of Howard Goldblatt’s Version of Frog in the Aunt’s Image Shaping

Abstract
Based on the self-built bilingual corpus of Mo Yan’s Frog and Goldblatt’s translation, by AntConc’s Concordance, taking “Gugu’s” and “aunt’s” as index words respectively, the character feature terms in their R1 position are retrieved. Then, the author compares the similarities and differences between the aunt’s image shaping in the source text and Goldblatt’s translation. It is found that Goldblatt skillfully uses explicit and implicit translation strategies when shaping the aunt’s image. The former includes showing implied information and adding modifier words. The latter is mainly achieved by avoiding self-evident information. More comprehensive features of the aunt in Goldblatt’s version are presented by the two translation strategies. Goldblatt’s translation is of great significance to meet the reading needs of English readers and improves the external communication of Chinese literary works as well as Chinese history and culture. This study has an enlightenment significance for the English translation of Chinese literary works going out.
