Chasing Back and Moving on—A Comprehensive Overview on Communicative Language Teaching

Abstract

CLT is a milestone of the development of second or foreign language teaching methods. It characterizes itself from the former ones by focusing on communication of learners, and it strengthens interaction both as means and goals. This essay firstly introduces the creating background information and the definition of CLT, and then analyse the feedback of CLT in real practice. By analyzing a case study of concrete teaching experience, it finds that CLT has some inevitable drawbacks in teaching practice from both students’ and teachers’ aspects, including limited scale of utility, high requirement to teachers, unsatisfied learning effect, not enough coordination of students and negative effect of students’ various personality. Then it therewith puts forward some practicable suggestions in order to promote the utility and effect of CLT in real condition. Because we still praise that CLT has an indispensable function in the development of language teaching approaches, as it is a milestone in foreign and second language teaching which broke traditional cognition.
